Climbing Gear: How Long Should It Last?
Because of the dangerous nature of climbing, using climbing gear for extended periods of time is not advisable. Even some of the seemingly lesser gear like gloves should be carefully considered before being used. Just think of being up there and your grip slips, you fall, then you are relying on your rope, harness, etc. to save you.
One quick example. Ropes are usually essential to climbing, and they have varying life spans. Depending on use, they might last 3-5 years or more, but typically, you’ll want to replace them within a year or less. Any kind of fray or stiffness in the rope is an indication of degradation. Don’t risk it!
